Cecchini on Cecchini

Article Abstract:

Italian lawyer and international banking and finance veteran Paolo Cecchini was appointed by the EC leadership to study the 1992 single European market program. The study took two years to complete and culminated in the publication of the highly controversial Cecchini Report. The 16-volume document takes a serious look at the impact of the unified market based on economist Michel Catinat's new economic model for the EC member states. Some criticize the report for oversimplifying a market mechanism that has infinite variables, while others accuse it of ignoring 'external' factors such as the response of the US and Japan to a single European market. Cecchini himself admits that the statistical data that his team had to work with were uneven and had holes in them, but he believes that they came out with a good report inspite of this problem. He is convinced that the economic modelling his team developed is a solid one.

Tobacco warning

Article Abstract:

The European Commission of the European Community intends to issue a directive that will severely restrict the type and scope of cigarette advertising. The directive will regulate the size and content of advertisements and the presentation of products, implement a single warning for the single European market of 1992, and ban indirect advertising such as that on complimentary products such as lighters and ashtrays. Only the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands oppose the directive, based on the grounds that it will foster restrictive trade practices.
