In 1997, confectionery consumption in the UK totalled 839,000 tonnes (t), representing a value of 5,109 million pounds sterling. Of the total, chocolate confectionery made up 62.5% in volume (524,000 t) and 69.9% in value (3,571 million pounds). Cadbury Schweppes leads the market with a 28% value share, followed by Nestle Rowntree and Mars with a 25% and 22% share respectively. The UK market for chocolate confectionery is currently valued at over 3 billion pounds sterling, representing 69% in value of the total confectionery industry. In 1993, confectionery consumption totalled 14kg per head, representing 76.35 pounds in value. The countline sector, which includes a variety of snack bars, made up 1.2 billion pounds of total sales. Nestle's Kit-Kat outperformed the sector making sales of over 200 million pounds.

The UK retail market for chocolate confectionery rose by 13.6% to GBP3.85 bil between 1995 and 1999, while by volume it rose 6.4% to 579,200 t. In 1999, 77.5% of the market value was taken by Nestle, Mars and Cadbury.
