In 1997, confectionery consumption in the UK totalled 839,000 tonnes (t), representing a value of 5,109 million pounds sterling. Of the total, chocolate confectionery made up 62.5% in volume (524,000 t) and 69.9% in value (3,571 million pounds). Cadbury Schweppes leads the market with a 28% value share, followed by Nestle Rowntree and Mars with a 25% and 22% share respectively. An overview of market trends is given, along with company and consumer profiles, and details of distribution, pricing and forecasts.

The UK market for chocolate confectionery is currently valued at over 3 billion pounds sterling, representing 69% in value of the total confectionery industry. In 1993, confectionery consumption totalled 14kg per head, representing 76.35 pounds in value. The countline sector, which includes a variety of snack bars, made up 1.2 billion pounds of total sales. Nestle's Kit-Kat outperformed the sector making sales of over 200 million pounds.

Article Abstract:

The UK retail market for chocolate confectionery rose by 13.6% to GBP3.85 bil between 1995 and 1999, while by volume it rose 6.4% to 579,200 t. In 1999, 77.5% of the market value was taken by Nestle, Mars and Cadbury.
