A writer describes her tom-boyish childhood romping with a gang of little boys. A cherished memory of this time was the relationship she had with the mud of a pond, its texture and color and the creatures that lived in it. As an adult she visited Africa and lived in an adobe Ethiopian house.

Lithuanian Pres Vytautas Landsbergis's Sajudis party received only 20% of the vote in the Oct 24, 1992 national elections. The Democratic Labor Party (DLP), comprised mainly of ex-communists, won with 44%. The surprising DLP victory is due to voter dissatisfaction with the economy.
