Community TV gets corporate

Article Abstract:

Community TV stations in Canada have been forced to seek sponsorships from local, provincial and national advertisers after the CRTC stopped requiring cable operators to support their community TV subsidiaries on Jan 1998. Among them is Rogers Cable, which has 17 channels in Ontario and five in BC. The company has launched a program to search for advertisers that will defray production costs, or supply products or prize picks through contract deals. Nesbitt Burns, Ernst and Young, Parke-Davis and OK Tire are some of the firms that have become its advertisers.

1999 touted as year of DVD takeoff

Article Abstract:

Digital video disc technology projects 1999 to be the year that will extensively propel the growth of the industry, following the positive impact it made in 1998. However, the growth of the sector will depend on the availability and affordability of DVDs in the market, says Jeff Aston of Future Shop. Albert Daoust of Evans Research Corp said that DVD player sales in 1999 could manage to grow five times to 200,000 units as compared with 1998 sales of around 40,000 units in Canada
