Cross-cultural research - should stimuli be psychologically pure or culturally relevant?

Article Abstract:

The study examined how photographs and 'Smiley Face' scales were perceived by New Zealand Europeans, Koreans and Tongans. Paired interviews were conducted and the respondents had to select faces which reflected how they felt about certain products. The Europeans preferred to match European faces and did not like to use faces from other cultures. The Tongans selected European faces more readily than Tongans ones and the Koreans also selected European faces because they had more expression than the Korean ones. However, culturally specific pictures can also be useful.

The role of environmental consultants

Article Abstract:

Environmental consultants play a number of significant roles in merger and acquisition deals. The initial task is to review and investigate the site history, using resources such as trade directories and maps. Special investigations may have to be undertaken if there is likely to be any significant risk of contamination. The environmental consultant must have knowledge of areas including chemistry, geology, biology and hydrogeology in order to give a truly accurate assessment of the problems which a site may have.
