Culture club

Article Abstract:

Chimpanzees can pass on knowledge and this applies to more than isolated behavior patterns. The complexity of the patterns, which are not related to environmental factors, indicates that chimpanzees have cultures which can be transmitted. Research has been carried out by Andrew Whiten from St Andrews University in Scotland, and Christophe Boesch from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, in Germany. Some chimpanzee behavior patterns appear to be linked to genetic factors, while others do not.

Chimps or chumps?

Article Abstract:

University of Southern Louisiana researcher, Daniel Povinelli, has carried out research on the mental life of chimps, and he has found that chimps do not appear to link seeing with paying attention. Chimps judge whether someone is paying attention to them moreby their posture than by their gaze. Chimps can be taught to interpret cues better, though they also tend to forget what they have learnt. Chimps do not appear to have empathy as is seen in humans.

Bang the rocks together, guys: chimpanzee culture

Article Abstract:

Chimpanzees use tools, but different groups use do not necessarily use the same tools in the same ways. Research by William McGrew of Scotland's Stirling University suggests that much can be learned about man by studying chimpanzees.
