Article Abstract:

The US has seen some 20 years of prosperity and this has benefited some 1% of the population, rather than the population as a whole, while income inequality has increased. There is greater inequality in wealth distribution and it is highest since the US Depression. The income of the poorest fifth has dropped by 9% in real terms since 1977, though some of the survivors of 1977 may be better off since the composition of this fifth has changed. The data comes from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. It may not show the true extent of inequality since executive pay shot up in the 1990s and stock market wealth also increased, while the data show little change since 1989.

How rich is London?

Article Abstract:

London, England, is relatively well-off, and inner London has a higher per capita gross domestic product than other European cities, according to data from 1996. The data is based on output and work places, rather than incomes and homes, and this exaggerates the importance of inner London compared with parts of south east England where workers commute from. Data for London and south east England show it to be at a similar level to Bavaria, Germany, but not as rich as Hessen.
