The two-pronged effect good consultants can have
Article Abstract:
The two basic situations in which corporations rely on the help of consultants are those cases in which the assistance is required only for a particular purpose, and those in which the need is more chronic, which is referred to as systemic power dynamics. In the first case, the consultant is a specialist whose services will be required for a short time, and often the need is caused by management's inability to absorb original ideas and support them sufficiently. It has become mandatory for firms to rely on consultant services at some point, particularly for generating the innovative ideas necessary to be successful in international markets, and those that do not understand this fact are inviting catastrophe.

Why companies might be moving steadily towards specialization and flexibility
Article Abstract:
Companies developing recovery plans to counteract downturns caused by economic dislocations can either extend the principles of institutional organization that created the corporations in the first place, or adapt their organizational structures to be more flexible and to emphasize specialization. The latter appears to be the prevalent trend in the 1980s, but a major question remains: how certain can managers be that such flexible specialization will be dynamic enough technologically to create never-ending enhancements of efficiency in manufacturing? A description and analysis of flexible specialization are provided, and the chances for the successful implementation of such systems is discussed.
