Democracy and the price of pork chops

Article Abstract:

The majority of Eastern European countries are facing profound economic crises. Hungary and Poland, which are in worse economic shape than East Germany and Czechoslovakia, have foreign debts of $20 billion and $40 billion, respectively. The European Commission is seeking to grant Hungary and Poland 300 million European currency units worth of aid and favorable European Investment Bank loans, and the Commission has proposed to revise trade agreements in the two countries' favor. Eastern European countries have well educated, industrious work forces and Western investment and aid will help lessen the economic crises that threaten the countries' new political reforms.
