A Mar 10, 1996, newspaper column by Malaysian government economic adviser Daim Zainuddin shook up Kuala Lumpur with its implicit criticisms of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. Malaysian politics eschew such open confrontation, and several more articles responded to Daim's, some with sharp attacks. Daim, a former finance minister and trusted ally of Mahathir, says he simply wants more open debate among Malays and more room in the local press for alternative views on government policy. Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim could benefit.

A sensual and sex-heavy advertising campaign in Malaysia for the new Bufori automobile has heightened the national controversy over appropriate moral values, broadcasting, and censorship. Feminist groups are furious over the ad, which the agency withdrew after three weeks, but it easily passed muster with state censors. The same censors have repeatedly delayed a different ad over a model's too-sensuous bite of an apple, raising questions about ambiguity and the politicization of moral policing.

The Malaysian Information Ministry has chosen four advertising companies to manage airtime sales for the national television channels RTM1 and RTM2. Estimated 1997 advertising sales valuing 300 million ringgit will be divided between the advertising groups G-Team Consultants, Medan Mas, Niche Marketing and Utusan Media Sales. The Malaysian advertising sector is expanding quickly.
