English: the common language of Europeans?

Article Abstract:

Just short of 10 million homes receive Super Channel, an English-language satellite broadcast service designed for audiences across Europe. Career journalist John Suchet has emerged through Super Channel as Europe's most visible 'English professor' at a time of growing interest in English language instruction, through a daily pan-European television news show. Suchet's slow delivery style is said to be one reason for his popularity among non-native English speakers. English's growth as a common European language has accelerated lately, despite objections among French and German linguistic purists. It is estimated that 1.5 billion people will use English as a second language by the turn of the century.

American as a Foreign Language

Article Abstract:

It cannot be safely assumed that all American educational software can be used in British schools. Besides the familiar problem of the different spellings of words, there are also the differences in teaching methods and cultures. The Havering Educational Computer Centre is attempting to address some of these difficulties by importing programs from the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium. Schools can apply for membership to the Havering Centre and then have access to American programs which they can buy individually and test for suitability.
