Eurocopter EC 635
Article Abstract:
Eurocopter's EC 635 utility helicopter, a contender for the South African Air Force's replacement for the Alouette III helicopter, has a bearingless main rotor with optimized composite rotor blades. It has a one-piece rotor shaft and hub and features wide use of composite materials. The EC 635 is powered either by a Pratt & Whitney 207 or Turbomeca Arrius 2B2 engines. Its cabin can be easily configured to allow a variety of seat combinations or installation of medical mission equipment. The EC 635 has sliding side doors and two large clamshell doors below the tail boom and can accomodate seven passengers and a pilot. Avionics include a conventional display with electro-mechanical instruments or a completely integrated Sextant/SFIM Meghas glass cockpit.

Agusta's A109M helicopter, a contender for the South African Air Force's replacement for the Alouette III helicopter, has the basic characteristics of its predecessors, the K2 and Power, but it has a bigger payload and greater cruise speed. The A109M has a titanium main rotor hub and is powered either by a Pratt & Whitney PW 206C or Turbomeca Arrius 2K1 engines. The Agusta helicopter features a sliding door and a functional cabin lay-out that can accomodate seven passengers and a pilot. The A109M's essential night-vision-goggle-compatible cockpit layout has an integrated display system built on two multifunctional active-matrix liquid crystal display screens.

Bell 427
Article Abstract:
Bell's latest conventional helicopter is the model 427, which is a contender for the South African Air Force's replacement for the Alouette III helicopter. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW 207D turboshaft engines, the 427 can carry seven passengers and a pilot. The cabin can be easily configured for different operations, allowing a seating arrangement of either three abreast facing each other, side-by-side or back-to-back. A removable modular cargo floor provides space for a cargo load of 600 kg. The 427 features a cockpit for a two-pilot operation and has an integrated instrument display system that is made up of two color flat panel displays.
