Article Abstract:
Fibrous protein clumps have been linked to Alzheimer's disease and other conditions such as Parkinson's disease. These clumps, or amyloid plaques, have been studied by Oxford University's Christopher Dobson, with Luis Serano from the European Molecular Biology Lab, Germany. Dobson has discovered that possibly all proteins can form amyloids if conditions are right. Mutations can suppress amyloid formation, and drugs could be produced to stabilise proteins that could form amyloids.

Taxol is a very promising experimental drug in the treatment of cancer, but it is in scarce supply. It is derived from the bark of the Pacific Yew, and removing the bark kills the tree. Researchers are looking for ways to synthesize the drug or other yew tree sources, either domestic or wild.
