Islamist push
Article Abstract:
Zamfara, Nigeria, plans to introduce Islamist law, according to the new governor, Ahmed Sani. The debate on this moves reflects wider divisions in Africa between Islam in the north and Christianity in the south. Christian leaders in Nigeria are concerned about trends in Zamfara, which they see as undermining the secular constitution of Nigeria. Nigeria's president, Lusegun Obasanjo, has not entered this dispute and he could provoke passions if he were to criticize a move to Islamist law.
