Accounting policies among the UK's leading companies are beginning to improve, but there are still many areas where progress needs to be made, according to Terry Smith, who attracted controversy with his book 'Accounting for Growth' in 1992. This was very critical of the accounting policies of GrandMet, a client of UBS Phillips and Drew, where Smith was working at the time. Most stockbrokers' analysts are too prepared to follow the crowd, and tend not to be critical enough.
