Fund cap sparks Manchester fury

Article Abstract:

Key projects in Manchester's regeneration are facing calamity because the government has blocked an important tramlink extension planned to serve the city's flagship projects. Architects designing the New Islington Millennium Community and Sportscity projects have reacted to transport secretary Alistair Darling's decision not to fund three new Metrolink lines connecting Manchester's northern and eastern districts to the city centre.

Needed: A vision for the 'burbs: If suburbs are where most of us live these days, where's the debate about how best to improve and promote them?

Article Abstract:

The year 2004 has seen the appearance of suburbs on the policy agenda due to factors such as regeneration, high densities, living streets and alternatives to cars. The suburbs and the discontinuous outer suburbs are neglected in transport policy and hence the Independent Transport Commission (ITC) calls for an urgent need for policies for suburban land use and transport.
