German Army upgrades CL-289 drones following Kosovo

Article Abstract:

Dornier GmbH, the systems integrator for the CL-289 drones of the German Army, will not reopen its production line to replace the six drones shot down in Kosovo, Yugoslavia. Instead, a combat effectiveness improvement program will be implemented on the remaining units. The drones, which performed a total of 237 reconnaissance missions during the conflict, are expected to be upgraded with the Sword synthetic aperture radar sensor that was developed by Thomson-CSF and Dornier.

Upgrades will lift Gripen into next decade

Article Abstract:

Planned upgrades for Saab Aerospace's JAS 39 Gripen fighter aircraft are already in the pipeline stretching as far as 2009. One of these is a new engine that will increase the aircraft's agility. Four configuration upgrades will also be introduced on the production line. There are also three modification packages to be introduced as retrofits to Gripens already in service.

Fledermaus adds ESM capability to UAVs

Article Abstract:

STN Atlas will expand its family of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by adding an electronic support measures (ESM) variant, called Fledermaus, following a contract received from BWB, Germany's defense procurement agency. According to STN executives, the contract for the concept definition of Fledermaus was awarded in late 2000, and the work is expected to be completed by the end of 2001. The company will define a concept for the integration of ESM payloads inside a UAV.
