Article Abstract:
Trials on patients using cannabis to alleviate medical conditions are to be started in Britain. Cannabis is legally seen as more dangerous than morphine and heroin, which can be prescribed, unlike cannabis. The Police Foundation sees this as absurd. The government has rejected a call for physicians to be permitted to prescribe cannabis prior to the trials. Cannabis appears to be effective in helping to control a range of conditions such as vomiting and muscle spasms. This may help patients suffering from cancer, AIDS and multiple sclerosis.

System failure?
Article Abstract:
An investigation of abuse of children in residential care in Wales and elsewhere in Britain has led to action by the government, which includes a plan to increase numbers of adoptions. This may not always be the best option, since many children in the care of local government have behavioral problems. An independent commission is planned to monitor care homes and regulate staff. There have also been calls for a children's rights commissioner, though it is uncertain whether this would simply create more bureaucracy.
