Hanging on the telephone

Article Abstract:

Industry observers predict the worldwide telecommunications industry will continue to undertake many mergers and acquisitions due partly to the privatisation of the industry but also as companies expand into other areas of the business. The introduction of innovative technologies has been an important impetus for acquisitions, as companies buy new ideas by purchasing other firms. Privatisation has led to many new operators coming into the industry. Several large deals were initiated in 1998, as the large companies competed to have global market dominance.
