Iberia autofinanciarar la compra de los nuevos Airbus

Spanish airline Iberia has signed an order for eleven long-haul Airbus 340 aircraft, which are said to be worth around Pta 240,000mn, although the exact amount of the operation is not known. Of the eleven ordered, six are firm orders, with a delivery schedule of one in 1999, three in the year 2000, three in 2002 and the last aircraft in the year 2003. The remaining five are under an option to buy arrangement. Iberia plans to replace the current DC-10 aircraft and leased planes it is operating with the new aircraft. The actual purchase is still subject to the collective agreement for pilots, since the company needs all 130 pilots for its long-haul service.

Spanish airline Spanair is planning to step up competition with Iberia in the scheduled flights market, and will be adding seven new aircraft to its fleet raising the number of aircraft to 32 by the year 2000. An order for an additional 18 planes is also said to be in negotiations with Airbus and Boeing, which could be added to the fleet in a five-year period. Spanair's goal for the year 2000 is to reach a passenger base of 3,750,000 and a market share of between 22% to 25%, compared to the current 14%. Spanair now has 2 MD-87 aircraft, 21 MD-83 and 2 Boeing 767's. The seven new units will be one Boeing 767 and five or six aircraft with 150 to 170 seats.

In its 1999 budget, the Spanish government has boosted funds for new 'AVE' (high speed) rail projects by 40%. The infrastructure management entity, GIF, will receive public funds totalling Pta 163,000mn for the Madrid-Valladolid and the Madrid-Barcelona AVE lines. The Madrid-Valladolid line includes the Guadarrama tunnel project. Together with GIF's investments of Pta 136,000mn in 1999, and rail operator Renfe's investments of Pta 68,000mn, the total rail transport investment in Spain in 1999 will be Pta 253,000mn.
