Image-making
Article Abstract:
Spanish prime minister, Jose Maria Aznar, aims to present his People's Party as embodying centrism, stressing job creation and family values. The party has not fared well in opinion polls, and only has a small lead. Aznar's image has been portrayed on a large screen at the party conference, and it is hoped that voters will be attracted by this representation of the leader, as well as the moderate ideology, and a new team. Opinions polls have shown some improvement, though it may not be enough for Aznar to seek an election in summer 1999.

Triumph for the right
Article Abstract:
The ruling People's Party has won Spain's elections in Mar 2000, and was helped by a drop in unemployment as well as the consensual and cautious approach of the government. Many voters were repelled by an alliance between the United Left, with links to communists, and the Socialists. Prime minister, Jose Maria Aznar, has less need of support from regional groupings, but cannot ignore regional politics. Regional parties have increased the number of seats they hold to 33 from 29.
