In defence of design

Article Abstract:

Professor Robert Gutman gave a talk in London, England comparing the architectural professions in Britain and the USA and arguing for closer links between pracitsing architects and academics. Gutman believes the construction industry invests too little in research and that architects should take a lead in this area. His comparison of the British and American professions stressed historical similarities and the gradual movement towards greater public awareness. Gutman believes architecture is increasingly open to public debate and that this is an opportunity for the profession.

Selling the idea of learning

Article Abstract:

UK architectural students are being encouraged to take a new approach to the design of buildings used specifically as places of learning. Several new concepts are being experimented with by different councils within the London area. Tower Hamlets is converting its existing library facility into several different centres which will be known as Idea Stores. The hope is users will be encouraged to use each store as a centre of lifelong learning.

Forging a creative generation

Article Abstract:

The key elements of the UK Design Council's Design in Education Week in 2000 will be the launch of Creativenet, partner events and accredited fringe events. Design practice Bisset Adams is working with Highgate Wood School in London, England.
