Inflation targeting in Britain

Article Abstract:

Recent research has looked at the impact of the UK government's aim of keeping underlying inflation within the 1-4% range on monetary policy and considered whether this approach is an improvement in the way in which inflation is tackled. There is currently very little public faith in the conduct of monetary policy, and the government may have to consider dealing with this by transferring responsibility to an independent central bank.

Whither economic reform in eastern Europe?

Article Abstract:

There have been many difficulties associated with economic reform in eastern Europe over recent years. Some countries have succeeded in establishing a strong private sector, while others, especially the states of the former USSR, are suffering a decline in economic activity. Economic reform has been hampered by insufficient experience of capitalism and by the collapse of planned inter-enterprise trading deals.

'Costing' public services: the lessons from management accounting

Article Abstract:

The two most widely used methods of management cost accounting, absorption costing and activity-based costing, are discussed with particular reference to the costing of public services. It is argued that it is vital to understand the true opportunity costs of public services.
