Article Abstract:

The Austrian Elbigenalp-based company Koch Digitaldisc GmbH, a producer of CDs and other audio and data carriers, has set up a subsidiary in Merano in order to tackle the Italian market. Demand for CDs in Italy is said to be growing at an annual rate of more than 37%. In Italy Koch has already won the PC magazine publisher Il Mio Castello and the computer retail chains Computer Discount, Task and Vobis as clients. Beside making audio and data carriers such as music cassettes, the Italian subsidiary will market Austrian-made recordable CDs. Koch Digitaldisc, which is active in all German-speaking countries and the UK, claims world market leadership in CD measuring technology. In 1997 the company, which is owned 84% by Gilde Buyout Fund of the Netherlands, recorded a turnover of Sch 537mn.

Krems Chemie AG, which is owned 94.5% by Neste of Finland, expects to find a partner or buyer for its industrial chemicals division by the end of 1998. The division employs 50 staff and generates an annual turnover of about Sch 150mn. Talks are being held with Austrian and foreign companies. A partner is being sought also for the technology division. This division is to look for external contracts with the aim of becoming the biggest maintenance services provider in Lower Austria. Krems Chemie, which is to concentrate on its core businesses of synthetic and natural resins and polyester, expects to double its profits in 1998. Turnover is to increase 10-15% from Sch 2.092bn in 1997.
