Kurt Biedenkopf, king of Saxony
Article Abstract:
Kurt Biedenkopf is the Christian Democrat premier in Saxony, Germany, and the party obtained 57% of the vote on elections on Sep 19, 1999. He has been a maverick, with some ideas that were ahead of their time, such as his stress on the need for welfare reform in order to strengthen the German economy. He has carried out a number of reforms in Saxony, such as the sale of state assets, and has attracted investment to the state. There is still an unemployment rate of over 17% in Saxony, and pensions and wages are lower than those of western Germany, but he has been backed by voters, as is shown in the Sep 1999 elections.
