LDP turns island dispute into a hot campaign issue

Japan's Liberal Democratic Party's campaign platform for the Oct. 20, 1996, parliamentary elections includes territorial rights to Senkaku Islands which are also claimed by other Asian countries. The campaign, which has displeased Chinese officials, intends to attract conservative voters and proposes a peaceful resolution with other claimants. PM Ryutaro Hashimoto is one of the high-ranking officials belonging to the party.

Mongolians take a page from Republicans

The Mongolian Democratic Union has patterned its Contract with the Mongolian Voter, which won them 50 of the 76 parliamentary seats in the 1996 elections, after the US Republican Party's Contract with America. Prime Minister Mendsaikhany Enkhsaikhan maintains that freedom, opportunity and responsibility appeal to Mongolians and that the government is keeping its pace of liberalization due to the belief in these principles.

Unity of Japan's reform parties would challenge LDP
Article Abstract:
Leaders of Japan's New Frontier party and Democratic Party should resolve their differences and unite to topple the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). A union between the reform parties will ensure victory in the next election and pressure the LDP to fulfill its pledge to trim Japan's bureaucracy. Meanwhile, LDP PM Ryutaro Hashimoto is expected to retain his post since the LDP holds 239 of the 500 parliamentary seats.
