LIving on the edge of the future: what next for our cities? In the light of predictions of huge housing needs, an Edge debate looked at housing policy and sustainability
Article Abstract:
Speakers at the second Edge debate include Peter Hall, Sir Jack Zunz and Ted Cullinan. The theme was 'City, suburb or country? Who cares?' and it asked whether 4.4 million new homes to be built in Britain by 2020 would be sustainable. Ted Cullinan called for considered design, the greater use of lifts in housing and the use of green grass or other plant topped roofs. Peter Hall suggested a collection of new settlements designed so that local journeys can be made by bicycle or on foot, and longer journeys by bus.
