Little comfort

Article Abstract:

There are important problems in the relations between South Korea and Japan. Seoul has expressed concern over Tokyo's role in future United Nations (UN) peace keeping exercises. It wants Japan's participation in world affairs to be economic and not military. Seoul has requested Japanese technology transfer to compensate for its huge trade deficit with Japan, an issue that Japanese companies will oppose. Lastly is the issue of South Korean women forced to provide sexual services to Japanese soldiers in World War II.

Brother enemy: Japan and Korea are tied by a painful past

Article Abstract:

A furious dispute in Seoul over the impending demolition of the former Japanese governor-general's office recapitulates the two countries' relationship. President Kim Young Sam and others want to tear down the imposing edifice, converted a few years ago into a museum at a cost of 40 billion won. Destroying it will cost another 34.5 billion won, and erecting a new museum, 330 billion won. It has long been a bitter reminder of Japan's rule, and the two countries have long admired and detested one another.

Haunted by the past

Article Abstract:

The unresolved issue of the existence of Korean sex slaves for Japanese soldiers during World War II, estimated at 60,000 to 200,000, is seriously affecting Japanese-South Korean relations. South Korea has demanded compensation for the surviving women and their families, but individual claims against the Japanese government are still pending in Japanese courts.
