Look back to London
Article Abstract:
Urban form is determined by movement, not merely the static features of buildings and street layout. This is illustrated by comparing the activity in parts of London with that in Milton Keynes, England. In London, the street plan appears to be incomprehensible but actually provides many areas where the lines used by people moving through the city intersect. This creates spaces where city life, shops, cafes, cultural facilities succeed naturally. Conversely, the planned new town allows far fewer natural intersections and actually aims to separate activity. This creates a static, lifeless town.
