Mahathir, closet westerner
Article Abstract:
Malaysian prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, has blamed foreigners for Malaysia's economic problems, though foreign investors see his comments as geared to the domestic audience. The way that he presents economic policy and represents rivals as having extremist views involves tactics that western politicians may be familiar with. The bad times are blamed on people other than himself, and he takes credit for recovery, though other economies in the region, such as S Korea, are recovering having used different policies.
