Master of war: Gen. Dostam acts as beacon to Uzbeks

Article Abstract:

General Rashid Dostamcalls himself 'President of the Northern Alliance,' ruling 10 of Afghanistan's 29 provinces with his seat of government in Mazar-e Sharif. Dostam is responsible for the balance of power among fractious Afghans. He has an impressive military arsenal with at least 60 tanks, armoured personal carriers,Russian-built jet fighters, helicopters and other aircraft. Dostam has efficiently led northern Afghanistan supplying basic utilities to Mazar-e Sharif while having his own tax policy and collection system. He has also developed ties with Afghanistan's neighbors including Iran, Turkey, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

Spring fever; the diplomats talk, and the warlords fight

Article Abstract:

Afghanistan's various warlords continue to fight each other as foreign diplomats pursue peace initiatives to end the conflict that has continued since the Russian-backed government regime fell in 1992. The US is showing interest in peace, prompted by concerns over Iranian involvement in Afghanistan. The Kabul government's refusal to agree to an arms embargo remains an obstacle to peace initiatives.

Let's make a democracy

Article Abstract:

Constitutional validity is the only obstacle for Afghans seeking to restore stability in the country after the downfall of Taliban regime. The conflicting interests between the Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai and his opponents at the loya jirga (grand assembly) to sculpt a constitution either for a centralized presidential democracy or a parliamentary system are discussed.
