Money supply to increase

Article Abstract:

The Hong Kong Assn of Banks has moved to address a possible liquidity drain that is associated with the coming of the year 2000. Anticipating a large demand for hard currency with the coming of the new millenium, the assn has permitted Hong Kong's three note-issuing banks to boost the territory's money supply from HK$90 billion to a high of HK$150 billion ($11.59 billion to $19.31 billion). The move follows the earlier action by a number of corporations, financial institutions and foreign governments to increase their cash holdings prior to 2000.
