Moro reprise

Article Abstract:

The Bangsamoro People's Consultative Assembly, which is campaigning for the creation of an independent Islamic state in Mindanao, Philippines, has emphasised that the agreement reached on Sep 02, 1996, between the Moro National Liberation Front and the Philippines government does not go far enough in meeting its demands. This stance is causing considerable concern for the government, which is about to hold peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which is not connected with the Moro National Liberation Front. It is likely that clashes will break out between the rebels and government forces.

Article Abstract:

Philippine Pres Fidel V. Ramos outlined his legislative program in his state-of-the-nation address given before members of Congress on Jul 27, 1992. Ramos' economic proposals called for the encouragement of foreign investments and the rationalization of the peso's exchange rate vis-a-vis the US dollar. Additionally, Ramos called for the legalization of the Communist Party of the Philippines. However, moves by Ramos to control the leadership of the Senate and the House of Representatives drew criticism from the main opposition party in Congress.

Crusader or crook?

Article Abstract:

Antonio Carpio heads many of the Philippine government's campaigns against corruption and privilege, earning him praise as well as enemies. Chief counsel to the Ramos government, Carpio has led the assault on former Pres Ferdinand Marcos associate Eduardo Cojuangco; the moves to confiscate Marcos's estate; and the legal battle to break up Philippine Long Distance Telephone's telecommunications monopoly. He has drawn fierce criticism, which he blames on political enemies.
