New society, new voices
Article Abstract:
Charles Dickens' Pickwick Papers reflected changes in Britain from 1836, and portrayed a wide range of British society. The monthly publication was widely read and this was helped by printing technology and the development of lending libraries. Dickens was a reporter, and could be accused of being too sentimental, yet his work is very informative of conditions at the time he wrote. This can be seen by comparing 'Hard Times' with Friedrich Engels' view of the working class.
