Nippon runs aground
Article Abstract:
The Nippon Challenge, Japan's entry into the 28th America's Cup, was perceived not only as a symbol of Japan's coming of age in terms of technological know-how, but also as an effort to boost Japan's image as a fair competitor in international affairs. However, the Nippon Challenge was eliminated on Apr 7, 1992, failing to duplicate the impressive debuts of the Americans and the Australians in the same race and casting doubts on the ability of Japanese naval architects to create original design innovations that translate into winning boats.

Utopian literature, empowering students, and gender awareness
Article Abstract:
Empowerment of students underlies the teaching of utopian literature. Two methods of student empowerment are through reader-response analysis and through guided design. The former involves a common reading assignment which enables students to experience a new sense of power as co-creators of text and as experts. The latter involves a series of open-ended problems which the teacher asks the students to discuss in small groups, drawing on the concepts, skills, texts and information which the teacher had earlier decided on teaching.

Saving our bacon?
Article Abstract:
The declining numbers of human organ donors is inducing increasing interest in the use of organs from genetically altered pigs. But there are serious concerns about the transfer of dangerous viruses from animals to humans, otherwise known as zoonosis. Some zoonoses only affect the first infected human, but it is uncertain whether there are other microorganisms that can jump species in unusual situations. The benefits of xenotransplantation must be balanced against the known and unknown risks.
