Deadly embrace

Article Abstract:

Kerberos encryption technology prevent passwords from being stolen and is a standard for servers using Unix, used by universities, financial institutions and other bodies. Computers using Microsoft Windows can link to Unix servers, but Microsoft has changed Kerberos so that Microsoft's version cannot be used fully with the standard, which critics argue pushes IT managers to choose all-Windows networks. Kerberos developers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology released their source code, but Microsoft has not done the same with its source code. This behavior means that a lenient settlement for Microsoft in its legal case could leave the company free to continue with business tactics that allow it to try to own standards.

After the verdict

Article Abstract:

Microsoft has been found guilty of antitrust violations, and there has been a move away from technology stocks in general, as well as those of Microsoft, in response to the case. Thomas Penfield Jackson, the judge, wants remedy hearings commencing on May 24, and a fast-track appeals process. The company could be broken into two competing firms, or even three. Alternatives that could be considered by the Justice Department are still likely to be structural in nature.

Now bust Microsoft's trust

Article Abstract:

Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson has found that Microsoft harmed consumers and competitors and stifled innovation with its market power. A further ruling is expected on whether antitrust laws have been breached by Microsoft. This leads to the question of what should be done, and a structural solution may be the best remedy. The aim should be to boost consumer choice and encourage innovation. Microsoft could be divided up into an applications company and operating systems companies that competed on price.
