On the waterfront

Article Abstract:

Architectural firm Robinson and McIlwaine took great care to achieve an appropriate balance between solid masonry and glass in its design for the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This ensured that the right level of transparency was achieved from inside and out. The building is designed as a symphony hall, but must also be used for many other purposes, and is therefore extremely flexible. It features a double-skin concrete roof, as it is located beneath the flight path to Belfast city airport.

Enhancing the city

Article Abstract:

Nottingham has a rich historic core and its inter war architecture was dominated by the City Housing Architect, TC Howitt. There were few forays into modernism and Owen Williams Boots factories celebrated the new architecture in significant scale. Post war, the Modernist Peter Moro was commissioned to design the Playhouse theatre, and in recent years a distinguished addition to Nottingham is the Inland Revenue building designed by Michael Hopkins.
