One-man band: Communists hold eastern state, but for how long?
Article Abstract:
An invitation to Left Front leader Jyoti Basu to be prime minister of India brought to the fore fears within the West Bengal state coalition of Communist parties that without him at the helm, they would fall. The Front has held a solid grip on power for 20 years and will for five more, but Basu remains the dominant force pulling together rival factions. His critics within the party say he has sacrificed socialist and communist ideals, effectively selling out to corporate interests. That approach has won few votes, however.

Model party: CPI-M hopes to be an example to all communists
Article Abstract:
The Communist Party of India-Marxist is seen by many communist parties from other nations as a model of how communism can still exert influence in a rapidly developing country. While the party's influence in India is limited, at best, its ability to recognize the changes in the country may make it a major player should no party receive a majority in the 1996 national election.
