One society, stretched and divided

Article Abstract:

Germany has a federal structure which allows for wealth to be spread, decisions to be decentralized, and diversity to be accommodated. There is still a need for reform of the system and this includes the need to reduce the number of the Lander. Some Lander are large and rich and others are small, with few inhabitants, and poor. Funds have been transferred to eastern Germany, but western Germany does not wish for an indefinite transfer. Women in eastern Germany have found employment difficult to find, partly because childcare has come to be a greater obstacle than it was in East Germany.

The burden of normality

Article Abstract:

Germany is moving toward normality though it is still affected by history. West Germany was born without the eastern flank of Germany and the occupying powers held supremacy, as did the Soviet Union in East Germany. Germany underwent reunification in 1990 when a new move toward normality started. This normality was emphasised with the election of a new government in 1998, with Gerhard Schroder as chancellor. The German capital is being transferred to Berlin from Bonn. Germany has also attracted immigrants from the east.

The Berlin republic

Article Abstract:

Germany is moving away from its past and toward normality. There have been demands for compensation for the Holocaust which have led to a remark that Auschwitz should not be used as a moral cudgel. This remark, from author Martin Walser, was criticised by German Jewish leader, Ignatz Bubis. German sense of guilt in relation to the past is disappearing, as are some other characteristics such as deference toward political leaders and fear of inflation.
