One steppe back
Article Abstract:
The Mongols had long sought to conquer China, and Europe was seen as a distraction in comparison. Europe was backward and poor, in contrast to China. Batu was a Mongol leader who settled in on the Volga, while Guyuk became the top leader. The Mongol capital went to Beijing, and then Chinese Mongols divided between the assimilated faction and the nomadic faction, with the Ming emperors being born of the Chinese rebels. Meanwhile, an alliance led by Moscow smashed the western branch of the Mongol empire in 1380.

Steppe dancing
Article Abstract:
Cultural activities in Ulan Bator, Mongolia, include opera, while Mongolian cultural traditions are attracting foreign artists. The Halh majority culture and language tend to predominate, and there is long-term mistrust of China. Mongolian identity is being developed in music, dance and sculpture. There is pleasure among Mongolians from their songs and poems. There is also an optimism which can be seen in the way that ordinary people amuse themselves by sliding playfully on pavements when they are icy.
