Pres Violeta Chamorro is finding it difficult to rebuild war-torn Nicaragua. Both political sides are criticizing her efforts toward reconciliation, some Contras are re-arming, half the country is unemployed and generous foreign aid goes mostly to service foreign debt.

Rebellion reborn: Nicaragua
Article Abstract:
Nicaragua has been facing rebellion by both former Contras and former Sandinist soldiers, who recently occupied a regional capital. Widespread poverty and violence give the coalition government of Violeta Chamorro only minimal leverage against the rebels.
