Retailers size up Malaysia; consumers are getting richer and fussier, foreign firms find

Major retailers from abroad are finding out that Malaysian consumers are becoming more discriminating as they get richer. With many stores to choose from, these big foreign retailers have to carefully consider location, parking space and marketing to capture the attention of Malaysian consumers. Jusco Co., the third-largest retailer in Japan, incurred losses amounting to about $9.9 million as it tried to penetrate the Malaysian market, when its two stores failed to please shoppers. Isetan Co., also of Japan, has also shut down a two-year-old department store in Kuala Lumpur.

Men's magazines aim to stand out as reader flip past start-ups

Men's Review and newcomer "his" are among the English-language magazines for men that are aiming to establish their presence in Malaysia's publishing market. The trend reflects the growing competition in the market for magazines, a development that is giving advertising more options. The monthly Men's Review maintains a print run of 20,000 and focuses on politics, fashion, sports and social commentary. The start-up "his," which sold out its initial 15,000 copies, features articles that are just within the lines of Malaysia's censorship laws.

Malaysia's plans for high-tech corridor spark interest as well as questions

Malaysia's plans to become a leader in information technology drew skeptical comments from analysts, who cited that Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's ambitious plan for a telecommunications corridor would need expertise. The comment was issued after organizers of the conference where Mohamad announced the plan for the building of the so-called Multimedia Super Corridor had problems operating a simple video equipment. However, some critics are confident that Malaysia can make the transformation but it has to seek help from foreign experts.
