Righteous indignation: Buddhist leaders boycott papal visit

Article Abstract:

A recent visit by Pope John Paul II to Sri Lanka drew protests from Buddhist leaders but was generally peaceful. Comments by the Pope in his book, 'Crossing the Threshold of Hope,' criticized Buddhism in ways offensive to many Buddhists. Sri Lanka is 70% Buddhist and Buddhist priests, who boycotted the visit, pointed out that the Pope's remarks had offended many Sri Lankans. President Chandrika Kumaratunga, who had had the support of many Catholics in the recent elections, received the Pope cordially. One of the hihglights of the Pope's visit was a religious debate attended by many non-Buddhist leaders.

Looser reign: Kumaratunga unveils autonomy package

Article Abstract:

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga's latest effort to bring peace to her nation has again been answered with violence and terror by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). On Aug 3, 1995, she offered a package of proposals that would adjust the boundaries of the country's eight provinces and give each significant autonomy, a leading LTTE demand. On Aug 7, however, they set off an explosion, killing 22. The proposals would give each region control over education, regional police, some taxes, and the judiciary.

'One problem less': New Delhi backs Kumaratunga's peace efforts

Article Abstract:

Sri Lankan president Chandrika Kumaratunga returned from a visit to India with the full support of Indian leader PV Narasimha Rao and his govt in her efforts to establish peace with the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Kumaratunga strongly rejected certain LTTE demands, perhaps based on the popular support she knows her approach enjoys. She did, however, end the embargo on fuel supplies for Jaffna and eased the ban on fishing nearby.
