Round one to Rangoon
Article Abstract:
The July 21-23 1996 meeting of the Asean Regional Forum in Jakarta produced important diplomatic advances regarding Burma but few other noteworthy developments. Burmese Foreign Minister Ohn Gyaw endured tough questions over political prisoners, dialogue with dissident leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and the mysterious prison death of diplomat James Nichols, but his presence and the fact that any debate took place was remarkable. However, no progress resulted on South China Sea claims or a pending nuclear test-ban treaty.

Burma: who's isolating whom?
Article Abstract:
The United States is engaged in a policy to isolate Burma. The tactic to isolate Burma has not worked and is unlikely to be effective for two reasons. Firstly, Burma is not an industrialized state, and secondly, no country has followed the U.S. on its sanctions policy and its attempt to quarantine Burma.
