PONDS MERGER PUSHES UP HLL NET
Article Abstract:
The amalgamation of Ponds (India) with Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) has enabled HLL to record a rise in its net profit in the first 9 months of 1998. Its net profit increased to Rs576.33 crore (Rs412.18 crore in the same period of 1997). Its sales rose by 23 percent at Rs7,138 crore (Rs5,806 crore). Its exports grew by 60.7 percent at Rs1,350 crore (Rs840 crore). Its annualised earning per share grew by 26.9 percent to Rs35 (Rs27.59). HLL proposes to move out of the animal feeds and the dairy businesses. It also plans to forge one or more tie-ups for its speciality chemicals business with global know-how and technology providers. Ponni Sugars and Chemicals Ltd of Chennai has incurred a net loss of Rs2.69 crore in 1997-98 (a net loss of Rs3.58 crore in 1996- 97). Net sales of Ponni Sugars and Chemicals were Rs91.39 crore (Rs56.89 crore). Profit before interest and depreciation was Rs15.8 crore (Rs7.4 crore). Interest cost was Rs15.06 crore (Rs8.89 crore) and depreciation was Rs3.44 crore (Rs2.14 crore). (gs)
