Article Abstract:
Cosmo Films produces biaxially oriented polypropelene (BOPP) films. The price of BOPP films has fallen from $2.6 a kg to $1.2 a kg abroad. There is an oversupply of BOPP films in India. Despite producing 7,500 tonnes of BOPP films in 1997-98, the profit of Cosmo Films was hit. It incurred a loss of Rs1.44 crore in 1997-98. It focused on exports to western markets and its price realisation increased to $2-2.1 per kg. It exported 1,630 tonnes, of a total production of 5,909 tonnes, of BOPP films in the first 9 months of 1998-99. It expects to earn Rs25 crore through exports in 1998-99 (Rs12.4 crore in 1997-98). Cosmo Films has reduced its interest charges by repaying Rs4 crore loans. It has reduced its staff and implemented cost reduction measures. In the first 9 months of 1998-99, its sales grew by 29.4 percent at Rs63.41 crore. (rk) (kvr)

Novartis India has increased its sales by 22 percent in the first five months of 1998-99. The company has also introduced three new products of its Swiss parent in India. They are Exelon for Alzheimer's disease, Femara for breast cancer and Epitril to treat epilepsy. Financial institutional investors have increased their stake in the company to 6.7 percent. (khr)
