Safe route through Chicago
Article Abstract:
Chicago O'Hare International Airport is now on the second year of a two-year trial of biometric technology used for cargo security purposes. The airport so far has been satisfied with the system, which uses a combination of thumbprint imaging and smart card technology to limit access to 24 cargo sites. An airport official said the technology also allows the transmission of cargo manifests to air cargo carriers as early as 24 hours in advance.

West coast beats Asia crisi
Article Abstract:
US West Coast airports have seen passenger traffic from Asia decline dramatically since the Asian crisis broke out in early 1997. Duty free and retail sales have also slumped for Asian gateway airports such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu. Some airport officials, however, are reporting signs of a turnaround, although they remain cautiously optimistic.
