Safer paint: water-borne alternatives

Article Abstract:

Water-borne paints are safer than solvent-based products and are widening their market share. Two thirds of paints produced in Europe are water-based. Their advantages include quick drying, low odour, tolerance to damp and easy clean-up. They are less effective in wet and cold conditions and have poor early shower resistance. Volatile organic compounds in solvent-based paints threaten health of painters and building occupants are damage the environment by reacting with sunlight to produce photechemical oxidants. The principal uses of water-borne paints are for walls, trims, masonry and exterior woods.

Water, water, everywhere
