Spain celebrates a world of steel

Article Abstract:

The 1998 World Steel Conference in Spain discussed trends and innovations in steel construction. Environmental considerations are common throughout the world, as is the desire of architects working with steel to achieve effects of lightness and transparency and to create inspiring buildings. New materials include a composite steel and concrete product from British Steel called Bi-steel. New trends include greater use of steel frames in housing in Europe, and a move towards performance-based criteria in fire regulations which allows more design flexibility.

The control of development in Spain

Article Abstract:

Spain appears to be in line with general European practice and philosophy as regards development planning, examining three issues within the planning debate, development plans, land use, and the part played by local authorities and central government. Differences between the Spanish and British systems are partly due to Spain's legal system being based on the Napoleonic code, in line with much of the rest of Europe. This case study is useful because planning in Europe is likely to converge, in line with wider political, economic and social developments.
