Spirit of '86?

Article Abstract:

Fears are expressed that Singapore's economic growth in 1992 will be a repeat of that in 1986, when the economy contracted. The manufacturing sector, financial services sector and commerce are showing lacklustre growth rates and only the construction sector is holding the economy up. This is due to numerous government projects while the transport sector has also posted an impressive surge due to increased tourist arrivals. But analysts are confident that the 1992 economy will turn out right. One reason is that the US economy is slowly reviving and these two nations are trading partners. Another reason is Singapore's money supply continues to grow.

City in a state

Article Abstract:

Singapore has been reported to be experiencing an economic slowdown. Official government forecasts have been withheld from the press but preliminary statistics have shown that the economy only grew by 4.6-4.8% for the 2nd qtr 1992 from that of the same period the previous year. Furthermore, the growth rate of GDP is weakening and the stock markets have been hitting record lows. Part of the economic sluggishness of the country lies in the parallel stagnation in the rest of the Western world.

Reliant on Uncle Sam

Article Abstract:

Singapore's GDP is forecast to grow by a mere 5-7% in 1992, due in part to the slow recovery of the US economy. Singapore's manufacturing sector, which relies mainly on exports to the US, is expected to perform poorly. The commerce, transportation, communications and construction sectors are expected to post stable growth.
